Iron Networks Announces Development of Windows Server 2012 R2 Hyper-V Network Virtualization Gateway

BackJune 14, 2013 - San Jose, CA

Iron Networks announced last week at the Microsoft TechEd North America 2013 conference in New Orleans, the development of the HNV Network Virtualization Gateway appliance based on Windows Server 2012 R2. The updated appliance series has been named HNV for Microsoft Hyper-V Network Virtualization. HNV is built upon Windows Server 2012 R2 and integrates directly with Windows Server Hyper-V and Microsoft System Center 2012 R2. It will take advantage of the additional features and benefits brought to market with the newly announced Windows Server 2012 R2 and is purpose-built to enable and support the evolution of the Windows Server 2012 R2 Software Defined Networking (SDN) solution.

Hyper-V Network Virtualization provides Virtual Networks to virtual machines similar to how server virtualization (hypervisor) provides virtual machines to the operating system. Network virtualization decouples and isolates virtual networks from the physical network infrastructure and removes the constraints of VLAN and hierarchical IP address assignment from virtual machine provisioning. This flexibility makes it easy for customers to move workloads to IaaS clouds and adds efficiency for hosters and datacenter administrators to manage their infrastructure. It allows the necessary multi-tenant isolation, meeting security requirements, and supporting overlapping Virtual Machine IP addresses. Hyper-V Network Virtualization was first introduced last year with Windows Server 2012, and will be extended and enhanced this year with the release of Windows Server 2012 R2.

"Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V Network Virtualization introduced groundbreaking network isolation and built-in SDN capabilities for cloud infrastructure that serves enterprises and hosters," said Chris Phillips, Partner Director PM, Windows Server. "We welcome Iron Networks’ HNV Network Virtualization Gateway appliance, which takes advantage of the functionality in Windows Server 2012 R2 and System Center 2012 R2."

"Iron Networks is pleased to offer a Hyper-V Network Virtualization gateway to support the evolution of the Microsoft based SDN solution on Windows Server 2012 R2," said Billy Bath, CEO of Iron Networks. "This will give enterprises and cloud service providers an easy way to optimize and build out their private and public cloud infrastructures."

This version of the HNV appliance will be available at the end of this year. Iron Networks is currently shipping HNV appliances based on Windows Server 2012, and this product will be upgradable to the new release with a software update. The new version is fully optimized and upgradeable to take advantage of Windows Server 2012 R2 features. The HNV appliance is purpose-built for maximum scalability and performance and will come in various models to fit different deployment scenarios, providing the throughput requirements of enterprises and cloud service providers.
